But the bigger story is what happened after 2020.
Vital Farms started as a small operation selling truly pasture raised eggs locally. Then the company went public.
Today, major institutional investors like BlackRock, Vanguard, and Amazon hold significant stakes. What began as farm to table gradually became a profit driven model.
The hens are largely fed corn and soy, cheap, subsidized inputs. The yolks are darker, which signals quality to consumers, but color alone does not guarantee better nutrition. And while the eggs are technically labeled pasture raised, that does not necessarily mean consistent rotation onto fresh pasture.
